Abstract

Durian rind is a renewable, cheap and widely available lignocellulosic biomass in tropical
countries, especially Malaysia. The wide availability and its lignocellulosic characteristics
make durian rind possesses potential in second generation bioethanol production. The aim
of this research is to study the bioethanol production from durian rind by acid and enzymatic
hydrolysis. Acid hydrolysis was performed by sulphuric acid at 0.5-2.0 M, 30-90 minutes
and 90°C. The solid part of acid hydrolysis was continued to enzymatic hydrolysis by
cellulase to extract more reducing sugar. Highest total glucose of 54.7 g was extracted from
2.0 M acid hydrolysis for 90 minutes and continued with enzymatic hydrolysis. HPLC
analysis showed that 1.11% ethanol was successfully produced from the fermentation of
sugar extracted from durian rind.
