Removal Efficiency Evaluation for Constructed Wetland in Tropical Climate

The aim of this paper is to assess the performance of constructed wetland under tropical climate at Humid Tropic Centre Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for stormwater quality improvement. The parameters measured and discussed in this paper were Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Total Phosphorus, Total Nitrogen and Total Suspended Solid. The results that indicate the removal efficiency for Biochemical Oxygen Demand were recorded at range 4.55% - 85.12%, Total Phosphorus at 8.30% - 86.67%, Total Nitrogen at 13.10% - 86.59% and Total Suspended Solid at 8.33% - 96.10%. Additionally, the statistical analysis indicates significant values between the inlet and outlet of constructed wetland for parameters measured. The results obtained show the constructed wetland under tropical climate is capable to improve Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Total Phosphorus, Total Nitrogen and Total Suspended Solid before discharging to the nearest water ways. The finding is expected to contribute towards evaluating the design performance of constructed wetland with respects to hydrology and hydraulics characteristics for Malaysian condition.
