Assessing People and Social Responsibility and Carbon Disclosure Strategy of Global Top Energy Companies

Abstract

This study examines the level of people and social responsibility disclosure and carbon disclosure strategy of 26 energy companies under Thompson & Reuters Top 100 Global Energy Leaders in 2017. The data of people and social responsibility disclosure and carbon disclosure strategy have been collected by content analysis of annual report, sustainability report and webpage of 26 companies from the different industry such as multiline utilities, oil & gas, oil & gas related equipment & services, and renewable energy covering the year of 2019. Results provide evidence to suggest that for people and social responsibility disclosure, workforce disclosure recorded the highest score, while CSR strategy score recorded the lowest score. The average score for people and social responsibility disclosure denotes that all 26 companies have disclosed more than average score. For the carbon disclosure strategy score, the average score of carbon disclosure strategy is 6.6 which indicates that most of the firms recorded the great score in their carbon mitigation activities. Furthermore, it can be noticed that Renewable Energy and Multiline Utilities sectors both have higher scores in people and social responsibility disclosure. For carbon disclosure strategy, both industry’s sub-sectors recorded high score with the Oil & Gas Related Equipment and Services and Renewable Energy recorded the highest score. This study contribute to body of knowledge by showing the trend of disclosure practices of the top energy companies.
